Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over rising inflation, unemployment and the condition of the economy, alleging that the Centre had failed to provide relief to citizens struggling with financial hardship.
Addressing media persons, Kharge said the country was facing an economic decline and accused the Prime Minister of lacking a clear vision for governance. “The economy is collapsing and the Prime Minister has no vision to run the country,” he said, adding that ordinary people were bearing the brunt of soaring prices and shrinking employment opportunities.

The Congress chief described the current economic situation as a “government-created crisis,” directly blaming the Modi government for the increase in petrol, diesel and cooking gas prices. He said rising prices of essential commodities had made survival increasingly difficult for the poor and lower middle class.

“People are unable to manage household expenses because inflation has crossed all limits. The government has failed to control prices and provide relief,” Kharge said.
Targeting the BJP’s slogan of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” Kharge alleged that the government’s policies were benefiting the wealthy while worsening the condition of the poor. “The rich are becoming richer and the poor are being pushed further into hardship,” he said.
Drawing a comparison with the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, Kharge said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had protected citizens from the impact of rising global crude oil prices through subsidies even during periods of international economic crisis. In contrast, he alleged, the present government was “only engaged in exploiting the public”.
On the issue of unemployment, Kharge claimed that lakhs of government posts remained vacant and accused the Centre of deliberately delaying recruitment processes. He also alleged that profitable public sector undertakings were being sold to “selected friends” of the government, thereby reducing employment opportunities for young people.
The Congress president also criticised Modi’s recent foreign tour, saying the government advised citizens against buying gold or travelling abroad while the Prime Minister himself visited five countries. Referring to a social media video involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Kharge remarked that Modi presented chocolates from a private company instead of products associated with Indian cooperatives or government-backed brands.
“He could have promoted Indian cooperative products like Amul, Mother Dairy or Nandini. Such actions do not suit the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office,” Kharge said, alleging that Modi appeared more focused on publicity and photo opportunities than on advancing national interests abroad.
Responding to a question regarding praise for Modi by US President Donald Trump, Kharge took a swipe at both leaders. “People with similar qualities praise each other,” he said. “Trump wants to destroy the world and Modi wants to destroy the country. That is the similarity between them.”
